    From usability to secure computing and back again

    Secure multi-party computation (MPC) allows multiple parties to jointly compute the output of a function while preserving the privacy of any individual party’s inputs to that function. As MPC protocols transition from research prototypes to realworld applications, the usability of MPC-enabled applications is increasingly critical to their successful deployment and widespread adoption. Our Web-MPC platform, designed with a focus on usability, has been deployed for privacy-preserving data aggregation initiatives with the City of Boston and the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. After building and deploying an initial version of the platform, we conducted a heuristic evaluation to identify usability improvements and implemented corresponding application enhancements. However, it is difficult to gauge the effectiveness of these changes within the context of real-world deployments using traditional web analytics tools without compromising the security guarantees of the platform. This work consists of two contributions that address this challenge: (1) the Web-MPC platform has been extended with the capability to collect web analytics using existing MPC protocols, and (2) as a test of this feature and a way to inform future work, this capability has been leveraged to conduct a usability study comparing the two versions ofWeb-MPC. While many efforts have focused on ways to enhance the usability of privacy-preserving technologies, this study serves as a model for using a privacy-preserving data-driven approach to evaluate and enhance the usability of privacy-preserving websites and applications deployed in realworld scenarios. Data collected in this study yields insights into the relationship between usability and security; these can help inform future implementations of MPC solutions.Published versio

    Probing competitive interactions in quaternary formulations

    Hypothesis The interaction of amphiphilic block copolymers of the poly(ethylene oxide)–poly(propylene oxide)–poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO–PPO–PEO) group with small molecule surfactants may be “tuned” by the presence of selected alcohols, with strong interactions leading to substantial changes in (mixed) micelle morphology, whilst weaker interactions lead to coexisting micelle types. Experiments The nature and the strength of the interactions between Pluronic P123 (EO20PO70EO20) and small molecule surfactants (anionic sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS, C12SO4Na), (cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, C12TAB) and (non-ionic polyoxyethylene(23)lauryl ether, Brij 35, C12EO23OH) is expected to depend on the partitioning of the short, medium and long chain alcohols (ethanol, hexanol and decanol respectively) and was probed using tensiometry, pulsed-gradient spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (PGSE-NMR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Findings The SANS data for aqueous P123 solutions with added alcohols were well described by a charged spherical core/shell model for the micelle morphology. The addition of the surfactants led to significantly smaller, oblate elliptical mixed micelles in the absence of alcohols. Addition of ethanol to these systems led to a decrease in the micelle size, whereas larger micelles were observed upon addition of the longer chain alcohols.     'Complex Socialization': A Framework for the Study of State Socialization

    The article presents a model for the study of norms transfer through state socialization, which combines a Social Constructivist body of theory for ideational change with Social Identity Theory (SIT) for identity formation. The model privileges self- and other categorization processes which according to SIT takes place between all social groups, as the main determinant for the outcome of state socialization. By also reconceptualizing domestic structure into two separate we-groups; state/elite and nation/people, which may have different self- and other categorization dynamics, the model is able to not only account for the common occurrence of different outcomes of socialization in apparently similar cases, but is also able to take the mass domestic level into consideration. The question that is asked is therefore ‘why do the same norms matter so differently to apparently similar agents?
